Old and Useless Horses

Upper mesa Indian lands of New Mexico is the home for Kristi and Ansia.

Competing in numerous gymkhana and jumping events, "Worth Waiting For" (Kristi) and her owner Angelia Almos won many first place ribbons and trophies. Both horse and rider presented a polished and theatrical performance for the audiences.

Kristi developed navicular disorder and was retired.

Ansia is a young greenbroke quarterhorse mix.  She was purchased at auction to add to the developing herd.  Her Navajo upbringing shows gentle handling and a sense of humor.

Scott Derrick designed a solar heated water trough.  The south facing side is painted black, the top, north and west sides are insulated and buried with dirt and rock. The horses drink from the west(left) end which has a 1x3 foot opening on the top. Last winter when it was getting down to 8 below it would develop a 1/4 inch sheet of ice on the water over the opening. The horses could easily break this.

The wind-rain shelter is built from aluminium cans, cement and forest thinned pine tree trunks from Mt Taylor.  The roof is a rubber epdm fabric.  You can see the lava rock produting through the west wall in the back of the stall.
