On the eastern side of the house we built a Hut like room. The room balances against the Entryway/Mud Room on the west side.
The office is similar to the mud room in that part of the rear(north) wall is the exterior wall of the eastern cistern, a tire wall from the cistern wraps around clockwise stepping down to allow room for windows
and the east side door, and then connects to the front wall tire wall next to the utility room. In the picture below you can see the utility room behind the office room. The water heater is mounted to the
south wall/roof of the utility room, below that you can see the can wall of the utility room.
At this point the tire walls are done and infilled with concrete on the inside and outside. The windows and headers are framed in with double 2x8's.
We are laying out the vigas and attaching them to the header using the same method as used in the mud room.
Here's another view of us setting the vigas. If you look closely you can see the rebar sticking up out of the vigas. What's sticking up will be cut off later.
At this point we have framed in the bottom part of the skylight tube. Laid the double can wall wall and framed up wood forms for the concrete bond beam.
The vigas will be treated and porcupine before pouring the concrete. The top plate of the header and redwood plates in the lower bond beam are also porcupined.
We have installed the rebar dome and the first coat of plaster. The perimeter parapet can wall up and the windows set.
Here's the front view. We have removed the forms for the upper bond beam. You can see the foam insulation between the windows. Below the windows we are getting ready to install stucco netting.
The dome is ready for its final coat of tinted plaster. The rest of the room has just had the final coat applied. When we dug out the hill side for the house I
ran into pickup sized rocks just to the right of the tire retaining wall you can see in the picture to the right of the house. I'm standing on rock I couldn't budge with
the D8 bulldozer I rented. This put this entrance below grade. Luckily I was able to dig a 5 foot hole right outside the door opening, which we filled with 16 inch rocks and toped off with gravel per Vol. I.
We are just finishing the final coat of plaster on the dome. The door behind Zoli provides access into the Utility room attic or battery room. The small white box
in the right side of the picture is the combiner box for the PV panels.
Here's the view from inside looking up at the ceiling of our office. We lucked out and found the cull pile of a cedar mill. The cedar trees were logged 75 years ago
on the mountain to the north of us. Most of the wood wasn't suitable for furniture or other uses, but cut into 2' pieces it makes a beautiful ceiling. You can see the
skylight tube in the center of the ceiling.
Here's the final front view..
